How a Lock Breaks
A controlled layer lasts only as long as leaving it stays costly. A look at how Unix, the Mac's processors, Alpha, Linux and Windows on Arm each loosened, and what a bridge or an open alternative does to the cost of leaving.

Cold and Heavy: Why a Shipyard Town Could Hold an AI Data Center (the full walk)
Why a cold place with heavy floors and power, like a shipyard town in Maine, could hold an AI data center: the physics of the rack, who has to retrofit, the capital and staffing arguments, Maine's moratorium fight, and Newfoundland and Iceland. For investors.

Meet People Where They Are
We are all strangers in a strange land, and no one is legible from their stock — same parents, same house, different kids. The markers read the label, never the person, so the only honest way to know anyone is to go where they stand and read the shape and the why. And the hardest part: meeting a child where they stand has been made a luxury — bought with money (paying twice for private) or time (the presence to homeschool) — when raising the next generation is the most important work there is and the least compensated. That it is a luxury at all is the omission.

Investment as Faith
Strip an early-stage investment of the deck and the model and what's left is faith: do I believe these people can build the thing they said and find customers who'll buy it. Early diligence has few signs, and there's no bedrock under the bet — the same as the dollar, and the same as everything stacked above it: turtles all the way down, faith holding a stack with no floor. So you read the people, not the machine. But that read is only as trustworthy as the ground the reader stands on — which is why grounding yourself (touchstones set in calm, held by ritual, sourced from what formed you, solid enough to hand down) is the real precondition for underwriting anyone else's faith. The honest move is disciplined faith that admits it can be wrong.

We Live on a Small Blue Planet. We Still Think Like a Village.
We live on one interconnected planet and still think like a village — wired to track a band of a few hundred, blind to the chains that run across the world. So one decision at the Strait of Hormuz becomes a heavier grocery bill here and a famine two continents away, and we blame the drought, the market, the weather — never the people who decided. The apparatus is where the hand hides. Written with the counter-case held open.

A Machine-Made Print, Retouched by a Human Hand, Is the Whole AI Trade in One Object: the Reproduction Commoditizes to Zero, and the Only Value Left Is the Part a Hand Actually Touched.
The clearest picture of where the money in AI is going is not a chart — it is a hand-embellished print: a reproduction run off a machine, with an artist's paint added by hand on top. The base commoditizes toward zero, because anything reproducible does. The value is entirely in the touch — the scarce, un-runnable-off-a-press human layer. That is the whole trade, and most of the capital is still buying the base.

A Decade Ago the Smart Money Decided Cybersecurity Was the Trade. Most of Those Companies Are Gone. The Same Money Is Now Buying AI Models — and a Model Is Becoming an Operating System: Two or Three Will Matter, and Most People Will Never Know Which One They're Running.
Investors spent a decade pouring capital into cybersecurity and mostly learned that the product was never the point — the platform and the plumbing were. AI is running the same play at a larger scale. A frontier model is not a product you can own; it is becoming an operating system, and operating systems settle into two or three that matter. The money that makes sense sits above the model and below it. The middle — being one more frontier model — is the one layer that commoditizes, and it is exactly where the market is pointing.

A Venture Capitalist Spent Three Months Proving It With Benchmarks: the Harness Beats the Model. The Edge Was Never in the Weights — It's in the Room You Run Them In.
"It's the room, not the model" was a house view two weeks ago. It isn't anymore. Tomasz Tunguz has spent three months documenting the same claim under a different name — the harness — with benchmarks and margin math instead of a manifesto: hold the model fixed, change the room, and you change the product. The model is the commodity; the harness is the business.

America Invents the World's Most Important Technology and Owns Almost None of It. It Built No Place to Hold the IP — and Is Dismantling the Capacity to Wield What It Keeps. The Question Under the Whole System Is Who Holds the Pen, and Who Can Wield It.
A state-capitalist rival has a trivial answer for where government-created IP goes: into the company it owns. America, by design, built no such vessel — so its inventions walk into private hands, from Oracle to the drugs the public funds and cannot afford. And where the state does keep something, it has lost the people to run it. The thread is IP; the question is who holds the pen, and who can wield it.

The Closed-Model Premium Has Collapsed and Inference Is Heading Toward Nearly Free. Everyone Is Still Buying the Model. The Durable Edge Was Never the Model — It's the Room You Run It In.
Model capability is converging and token prices are collapsing toward zero — which means the model is becoming the commodity, not the moat. What does not commoditize is the room around it: the context it is given, the structure it reasons over, and the verification that catches it when it is wrong. Drop a genius into an empty room and you get a mediocre analyst. The room is the product.

NVIDIA Just Enlisted the Six Biggest Money Managers to Turn Its Chips Into a $500 Billion Bond. Private Equity Put $45.7 Billion Into Data Centers in One Year. The AI Trade Stopped Being a Software Trade — Follow the Boring Money.
The old tech-private-equity playbook — buy software, financialize the ARR, flip it — is broken, and the capital did not leave. It moved one layer down, into power, cooling, land, and the compute itself, which is now being securitized like a toll road. When the smartest money stops buying the model and starts buying the room the model runs in, that is the trade.

Washington Spent Decades Subsidizing Companies Without Owning Them. This Year It Started Taking Equity — Nine Quantum Firms in a Single Day, a Golden Share in Steel. The State Is Back on the Cap Table.
Governments are moving from subsidy to ownership — direct equity, golden shares, sovereign co-investment. When your co-investor is a state with non-financial objectives and special rights, diligence stops being about price and starts being about authority.

a16z Opened a Tuition-Free University This Month. It Also Runs a Public-Markets Arm and Is Helping Draft the AI Industry's Own Rulebook. 'Venture Firm' Is the Wrong Way to Read It.
The largest venture firms are vertically integrating into the functions that used to sit outside venture — talent formation, public markets, and governance. Read them as funds and you miss what they are becoming, and where the real exposure sits.

Anthropic Financed a Seven-Year Cloud Bill With Warrants. Oracle Declared Force Majeure on a Data Center It Hasn't Finished. The AI Buildout Quietly Became a Balance-Sheet Story.
The marginal dollar into frontier AI is no longer equity into a startup — it is a multi-year compute obligation, a vendor warrant, a lease on power that does not exist yet. That is venture-scale risk with none of the venture-style disclosure, and it does not show up where investors are trained to look.
